Val Kilmer and Cate Blanchett have worked alongside each other on two films, 2003’s The Missing and this year’s Song to Song.
And it seems that’s all it took for Val – who, it’s worth mentioning, is married- to develop a deep and let’s say… unsettling admiration for the Australian-native.
Taking to Twitter, the Top Gun actor spent the weekend praising the Academy Award-winning actress with a series of bizarre comments and photographs.
The tirade began: “Once I flew all the way to Australia just to talk to Cate Blanchett. Her husband met me first. Or, instead, I guess, to be accurate.”
“And recently I’ve had 2 dreams with #CateBlanchett in them. Her husband wasn’t in either of them,” he added.
So far, so disturbing…
Val then continued his as-yet-unrequited love affair by retweeting a fan’s “Woman Crush Wednesday” photo of Cate, 47.
The original fan photo was tweeted more than a week ago, which seems to indicate that the Batman Forever actor may have spent a considerable amount of time scrolling through hashtag archives to find the perfect shot.
They say everything looks different after a good night’s sleep but a visit to the World Trade Centre Memorial in New York City the following day seemed only to spur the actor on.
“She’s just as amazing in person. Some super stars aren’t—Some superstars don’t do a thing to ya in person—Cate is so real it’s almost unreal,” he tweeted.
“Once I did a cameo just to hang w/ #cateblanchett who [picked] up a shovel in our [scene]. I was so dazzled by HOW she picked it up I forgot my line.”
After sharing a selfie and a wordless video of a memorial pool at the sombre location, Val took the time to share yet another image of the Carol actress.
“I mean even if she couldn’t act you know what I mean?” he captioned the since-deleted black and white image.
It wasn’t long before fellow social media users began to call out the actor for his “creepy and obsessive” messages.
“@Ruth_Less_Lady nothing in the least creepy about loving someone,” Kilmer replied in defense. “What kind of world do you come from?”
When the same fan noted that Cate’s husband, Aussie playwright Andrew Upton, might take issue with Val’s unsolicited commentary, he replied, “she’s had to deal with her beauty and attraction and fame for 25 years. You think they are Quakers or something?”
But wait… there’s more! Really!
“I’ve never done said or written a single idea that wasn’t of the highest respect and admiration for #cateblanchett or any other great talent. She’s a friend of mine and I’ve met her husband thru the years and we’ve all gotten along just fine. Anyone who thinks I need to curb my enthusiasm for a great rare artist doesn’t understand how difficult the job is and how we artist count on the respect of our peers. She will back up every word I say n love that I say I love her. I would love an actor I didn’t even enjoy if he flew the world to talk about a role,” Val added.
Creepy or complimentary? We’ll let you be the judge.
