With deadly floods, COVID-19 and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine plastered over the news, it’s easy to feel helpless and uneasy at the moment.
But one of Australia’s most inspirational women, Turia Pitt, has shared a message of hope to Aussies struggling to cope at the moment.
The 34-year-old took to Instagram on Monday night to spread the message that it’s normal to feel “scared, sad, angry and overwhelmed”.
“There’s a lot going on. And a lot of it IS really scary and overwhelming,” she penned, before encouraging people to “find the small pockets of happiness” in their days.
“So if you feel like you “should just be getting on with it already” and you’re not – well, my friend, that is perfectly okay. Be kind to yourself,” she continued.
The mother-of-two said “accepting” that the tragedies in the world are happening will help overcome feelings of helplessness.
“Your experience right now time might better than someone else’s … or it might be worse. But, however you want to spin it, a tough time is a tough time. Accept it. There’s no need to temper it with an “at least”,” she said.
The author also advised anyone battling with their mental health to find an activity to keep their mind occupied.
“And whatever the answer is: making apple crumble, talking to a friend, putting on a comforting TV show, reading your favourite book, playing Monopoly with the kids … go and do it. Make it happen,” she said.

To make a difference to those in need both here and abroad, Turia urged Aussies to dig deep for flood appeals and humanitarian organisations assisting Ukrainians.
“There are also some brilliant movements being set up to help Ukrainians – like booking an Airbnb in Ukraine or heading to Etsy.com and purchasing some art as a digital download from a Ukrainian artist,” she continued.
