Several big-name stars who had been considered shoo-ins for months weren’t even nominated for the 86th annual Academy Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on March 2.

Here are the top 10 snubs from the 2014 Oscars nominations ceremony.

Emma Thompson: Emma received a Golden Globe nod for her role in Saving Mr Banks but didn’t even get a look-in at the Oscars.

Oprah Winfrey: The Oscar buzz around Oprah’s performance in The Butler was intense, but appears to have amounted to nothing, with the talk show queen not being recognised at the Oscars.

Robert Redford: Redford’s harrowing performance in All Is Lost led many to consider him a shoo-in to win the best actor Oscar this year, but he wasn’t even nominated.

Tom Hanks: Hanks gave stellar performances in both Saving Mr Banks and Captain Phillips but didn’t receive a nomination.

Joaquin Phoenix: Joaquin’s portrayal of a nerd in virtual love in Spike Jonze’s Her was incredible, so many were surprised when he was ignored by the Academy.

Idris Elda: Elba’s portrayal of Nelson Mandela in The Long Walk to Freedom has been lauded but it failed to earn him the Oscar nod so many people have been predicting.

James Gandolfini: The late actor’s performance in Enough Said was tipped to earn him a posthumous Oscar nod but he was left off the best actor short list.

Saving Mr Banks: The movie about the making of Mary Poppins was hailed as perfect Oscar material but received no nominations.

Inside Llewyn Davis: Another film that has been surrounded by best picture Oscar buzz for months, but didn’t crack the nominations.

Monsters University: For the first time in years, Pixar was not included in the best animated feature category, despite the buzz around its latest offering Monsters University.
