Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from Tom Cruise after five years of marriage.
Tom, 49, said he was โdeeply saddenedโ by his wifeโs decision to end their relationship.
Katie, 33, is understood to have filed for sole custody of the coupleโs six-year-old daughter Suri.
โKatieโs primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughterโs best interest,โ the actressโs lawyer Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement to People magazine.
Tom is currently in Iceland filming a new sci-fi movie, but had his spokesperson release a similar statement, expressing his concern for Suri as well as Isabella and Connor, his adopted children with Nicole Kidman.
โKatie has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children,โ the statement said.
Katie filed divorce papers in New York this week citing โirreconcilable differencesโ. Gossip website TMZ reports Katie is asking for custody of Suri, possession of the coupleโs New York home and a โsuitable amountโ of child support.
Katie signed a pre-nuptial agreement, but is still expected to walk away with a โsizeableโ portion of Tomโs $275 million fortune.
Tom and Katie married in a lavish ceremony in an Italian castle in 2006.
Their marriage has been plagued with rumours Katie was unhappy, but cracks didnโt start to appear until this year.
The couple have not been seen together in public for three months, with Katie noticeably absent from Tomโs recent Rock of Ages premieres.
Constant arguments over Tomโs religion, Scientology, and his jet-setting lifestyle are said to have killed the coupleโs romance.
It will be Tomโs third divorce. He split from his first wife Mimi Rogers in 1990 and his second wife Nicole Kidman in 2001.
