J.K. Rowling – best known as the author of the Harry Potter series, turns 49 today.
The British novelist has a classic “rags to riches” story. She conceived the idea of Harry Potter on a delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990.
She lived on welfare and her manuscript for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was rejected by 12 publishing houses. Bloomsbury decided to publish the book and it was an immediate success.
Since then, J.K. Rowling has sold more than 400 million copies of the Harry Potter books. Today, the author has a net worth of $1 Billion as of April 2014, according to the Sunday Times UK Rich List.
She has recently penned three books for adult readers — The Casual Vacancy and —under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith — The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Silkworm.
