The 68-year-old – who found fame as a bikini girl in a poster for Gold Coast tourism in the early 1970s – was found dead with a knife wound to her abdomen in her luxury apartment overlooking the Brisbane River last month.
An ex-boyfriend has been charged with her murder.
In the new issue of The Australian Women’s Weekly, Maureen’s family pay tribute to a woman who they remember as so much more than her public persona. And The Weekly finds out more about the circumstances surrounding her murder.
Maureen’s husband Graham and adult children Zachary and Angelique tell of a woman who was generous, kind, compassionate – and devoutly religious. “She was not only a beauty on the outside,” says son Zachary, “but also within.”
Much has been made in the news of the fact the man accused of Maureen’s murder was an ex-flame. However, all is not as it may seem.
As a young woman, Maureen walked the catwalks of Australia, London and New York and was a favourite of department store Myer and designers George Gross and Valentino. However, she gave up her career to care for her ill father and then to raise her children.
Well-known at the races for her statement style on Fashions on the Field, Maureen had also paraded latest fashions in front of Princess Anne.
