Former QLD Premier, Anna Bligh made an appearance on the March 2011 cover of The Australian Women’s Weekly. The original interview was organised before Cyclone Yasi hit but within 24 hours of the issue hitting newsstands nationwide, the Queensland opposition was attacking the cover star for posing for a photo shoot while her state was in turmoil.

Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard appeared on the cover of The Weekly’s August 2010 issue. It was a suggestion by some that the cover was an endorsement of her or her government. Editor Helen McCabe said: “It is not The Weekly’s role to back a leader, but it is our job to ask questions and to bring you the stories about the people who shape this nation.”
