It been the stage to some of history’s most memorable moments and as we count down to the 58th Annual Grammy Awards on February 15 this year, it’s only fitting to reflect on years gone by.
Indeed, the Grammys have been the stage in which the late Whitney Houston flourished. All in all, the I Will Always Love You singer scored a whopping seven gold statues before her passing in 2012.
It’s also helped facilitate some once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, including Elton John and Eminem’s powerful performance of Stan in 2001 and Taylor Swift’s duet with Stevie Nicks in 2010.
Of course, the Grammys red carpet is the ultimate runway and since its inception back in 1959 the award show fashion has never disappointed.
From JLo’s infamous Versace dress, Madonna’s cringe-worthy Matador outfit to the more obscure moments, like the time Aaron Carter showed up to the 1999 ceremony in a canary yellow suit – seeing what the stars wear is just as fascinating as the event itself.

But not all stars succeed in the fashion stakes. Case in point, Madonna’s questionable Matador-inspired get-up from 2015.
They were the unlikely duo that delivered magic during the 2001 show. Controversial rapper Eminem teamed up with Elton John for a spine-tingling rendition of Stan. “If I didn’t make a statement with Elton John tonight, I don’t know what else to do,” the rapper said at the time in reference to critics who had slammed him as a homophobe.
The evolution of Rihanna: The 27-year-old has grown up before us! Her first ever ceremony was in 2007 (far left, green dress).
Perhaps her most memorable look was her 2015 Giambattista Valli gown, which became the subject to thousands of memes. “I saw this dress on the Internet and I just fell in love with it,” she mused of her eye-catching choice.
Mama’s boy: Long before there was Kim Kardashian West, Yeezy was just a single guy who adored his late mother, Donda. So much so that she was his date to the 2005 Grammys (L). Later in the night, Kanye donned angel wings for a moving performance of Jesus Walks.
The Aussie pop princess wins big! “To actually be a recipient is incredibly special. I am thrilled and cannot wait to bring it home,” Kylie Minogue beamed after scoring her first Grammy for her hit song, Come Into My World in 2004.
Bringing down the house: “It’s a fairly tale and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks,” Taylor Swift said in 2010 after her killer set with the former Fleetwood Mac singer.
In a flutter! Cher’s dreamy butterfly ensemble from the 1974 awards are what fashion goals are made of.
She’s known for pushing boundaries and in 2011, Lady Gaga outdid herself when she rocked up to the Grammy in an oversized egg. “I was in it for three days. It was temperature controlled,” she says of the bizarre stunt.
Naturally, she hatched out of the egg for her performance.
