Adele made quite the return to the music world with her tear-jerking ballad, “Hello”.
The single has smashed eight records since it launched and has sold more than one million copies in the US in the first week.
Not too shabby.
However, it’s the hilarious parodies that are getting just as much attention as the song itself.
It all began when the internet noticed something strange: she was using a flip phone in the songs video.
A FLIP PHONE! Not a smartphone.
What. A. scandal.
Naturally, the internet broke down, questioning her phone choice and the video’s director, 26-year-old Xavier Dolan, had to come out and provide an explanation.
“I never like filming modern phones or cars,” Dolan told Los Angeles Times.
“They’re so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you’re reminded you’re in reality. If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they’re anti-narrative, they take you out of the story […] It feels like I’m making a commercial.”
Next up, “the internet” noticed the song sounded strangely like Lionel Richie’s, “Hello” which was released in 1984.
So naturally, Lionel joined in on the fun.
Even David Attenborough took a break from wildlife documentaries to narrate the beginning of the clip.
“The year is 2015. The world appears to have a green tint to it, but there are also some dead insects in the foreground, but don’t worry about that for now,” begins the soothing voice.
“She’s convinced that now is the time to strike, she, like all pop stars, needs to hunt to survive. But there’s a problem, the signal is poor and she hasn’t upgraded her handset since 1999. Hashtag flip phone.”
And of course, what would a pop-culture phenomenon be if it wasn’t addressed by Ellen DeGeneres.
Ellen, grasping a huge brick of a mobile phone that’s likely on loan from the Smithsonian, took a call in a skit on her show.
We’re glad the internet has been able to turn this heart-wrenching film clip into something funny.
It’s an Adele miracle!
