The Irwin family has made no secret of the fact they’ve faced financial hardship following a 78-day lockdown at Australia Zoo, which was enforced due to COVID-19.
Now sources exclusively tell Woman’s Day that conservationist Terri Irwin, 56, and her two children Bindi, 22, and Robert, 16, are planning an explosive tell-all documentary in a bid to save their beloved Australia Zoo from going under, and sparking a bidding war among Aussie and overseas television networks while they’re at it.
Following Bindi and Chandler Powell’s successful TV wedding special on Animal Planet, the family are said to be preparing a sit-down TV special to mark the 14th anniversary of Steve Irwin’s tragic death later this year.
“It’ll be highly emotional and a personal look inside their close-knit family,” says the source, adding, “It was actually Bindi’s idea – she really wants to honour her dad and make him proud by talking about everything she’s been through.
“Nothing will be off limits,” adds the insider, revealing that Terri is currently pitching the “no holds barred” interview to the networks.
“They intend to share old photos and videos of Steve,” explains the source, adding that “footage will show the late Crocodile Hunter enjoying life with his wife and two kids”.
“Bindi is especially excited to share these sweet moments with the world, but it’ll probably be very hard for her as well. She’s never gotten over her father’s death – she’s merely learned to live with it.”
Wildlife Warrior Bindi was only eight years old when Steve, 44, was fatally pierced in the heart by a stingray barb while filming along the Great Barrier Reef.
“She remembers the moment she heard the news like it was yesterday,” shares the source.
“Losing him was very hard. She tried to be strong. So in public she put on a brave face, but in private she wept.”
Baby on the way?
Bindi and Chandler always wanted to be young parents, and insiders at Australia Zoo tell Woman’s Day the newlyweds are already working on giving Terri her first grandchild.
Rumour has it the couple – who married in March before Australia’s first round of lockdowns – recently enjoyed a honeymoon at Spicers Tamarind Resort, just 20 minutes from the home they share with Bindi’s mum and brother.
“Everyone’s hoping for news of a honeymoon baby,” says an insider.
“They’d make the most gorgeous parents.”
