Former Home and Away star Tammin Sursok has sparked debate after complaining about copping a speeding fine.

The 38-year-old took to Instagram to reveal she was fined $300 and lost demerit points for driving 58 km/h in a 50 zone while in Victoria.

Tammin said she found the loss of points “excessive” as she didn’t want to dangerously “slam” on her breaks while heading out of a 70km/h highway into a 50km/h zone.

“FYI I like rules. Happy to pay fines. I think it’s important to drive safely,” she wrote.

But after receiving “aggressive” messages from fans who swamped her inbox, Tammin called on her followers to “debate without being nasty.”

“I love to hear people’s opinions. Opening up conversation is important… I don’t take any of this personally, I drive like a granny,” she said.

Tammin and her husband Sean McEwen share two daughters; Phoenix, nine, and Lennon, three.

“But the conversation at hand is – should we have some leniency when coming off highways as you have to slow down, [it] takes a beat.”

The Pretty Little Things actress went on to suggest speeding fines in school zones should be harsher, while asking her followers what they deemed to be a “reasonable” penalty.

Tammin’s unfortunate driving saga comes after she reveled to TV WEEK that she can’t see herself making a return to Home and Away just yet.

“I definitely know 100 per cent that I would never go back to a long-term character. The work is too intense and it’s continuous. It’s hard to spend time with family when you’re working that many hours,” she said in early April.

“I prefer shorter six-week roles or a guest spot but you know, never say never.”

Tammin, who starred as Dani Sutherland in Summer Bay when she was a teenager, has since taken up a role on Neighbours.

For the last 15 years, Tammin has been living in Los Angeles with her husband, writer and producer, Sean McEwen and their two kids, Phoenix, nine, and Lennon, three.
