Friends fear for swim star Susie Maroney after learning the man she’s planning to marry has a criminal past. Jonica Bray reports .
Marathon swimming champion Susie Maroney’s happiness in announcing her engagement two weeks ago swiftly turned to embarrassment when it was revealed her fiance is a criminal.
Susie, 35, showed off her diamond engagement ring a fortnight ago after falling for furniture maker Darren May in a whirlwind eight-week courtship. But her family’s joy was short-lived after the divorced father-of-two’s dark past was revealed.
Darren, 40, was jailed in 2007 for 12 months for stalking and breaching an AVO, while in 2006, he also faced court after being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated break and enter with intent and breaching an AVO.
It is not the first time Susie’s troubled love life has caused problems within her family, who are still coming to terms with her acrimonious divorce from Rob Daniels less than two years ago.
The banker called the police after a fight with Susie’s mother, Pauline, while moving out of the matrimonial home he and Susie briefly shared in Sydney’s south.
