It was with great sadness that her manager, Camilla Fluxman Pines, announced on Sunday morning Kidder had died peacefully in her sleep, aged 69.

No cause or other details have been provided.

The Superman franchise of 40 years ago was a blockbuster well before turning comics into movies became a thing. And both Kidder and Reeves were relatively unknown before landing the life-changing roles.

Later Kidder became a well-known activist for political and women’s rights and was also an outspoken critic of the Gulf War and fracking. She was arrested in 2011 taking part in a protest at the White House against the Keystone XL pipeline.

Kidder also had some issues with mental health, which she went on the record about, after she disappeared for several days in the 1990s. After she was found she would talk openly about her issues with manic episodes and depression, in a bid to raise awareness and understanding of bipolar disorder and its treatment.

Condolences and tributes are flooding in on social media like this one from DC, the comic giant behind Superman, and from Teri Hatcher who would go on to play Lois the following decade.
