When former Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage suddenly stepped down from her star role on brekkie TV in 2021, no one, least of all Sonia Kruger, ever imagined she would be back in the fold.
But it seems Sam, who turns 47 this year, is not quite done yet, and according to one well-placed source, the long-time Seven veteran is preparing to stage one of the biggest TV comebacks, with her former colleague Sonia firmly in her sights.
“It’s game on, and Sam has made no secret she wants a bigger piece of the pie, including at least one of Sonia’s prized hosting roles,” confesses a sleuth.
Insiders maintain Sam, after marrying Richard Lavender in 2020, has been hellbent on getting a foot back into Seven’s door when she secured a cameo role on last season’s Farmer Wants A Wife– and is now said to be slowly chipping away at getting a top spot.
And while many believe Sonia’s future with Seven as host of The Voice, Big Brother, and Dancing With The Stars remains safer than just about anyone at the network, for some, they can see the writing on the wall.
“Sam would look at those three big ticket items and think she could host at least one of them. What could happen, which has a few people very nervous, is they may just create a whole new prime-time show for Sam,” says the source.
“Which brings on a whole new dilemma – that’s going to need more money, so they may drop Big Brother, which flopped last year, and put that money into something Sam can sink her teeth into.
“Sonia is very smart – she’s a fan favourite at 57, and she’s even become a regular on Sunrise, promoting her own yoga and home fitness program alongside Nat and Kochie – she won’t give up easily! It’s only three weeks into 2023 and already there are plenty of warning bells ringing!”
