Sophie Delezio’s eyes twinkle with wonder as she ponders the miraculous powers of Mother Mary MacKillop.

With news that the inspirational Aussie nun, revered for her tireless work helping children and the needy, is soon to be our first saint, Sophie can barely contain her joy.

“Yes I believe in Mary MacKillop,” Sophie, now eight, tells Woman’s Day in her first parent-free interview. “She has come to me in my dreams. She looks different to me than she does in the pictures I’ve seen of her. She comes to me and talks to me and prays with me.

“When I pray I can see her. She’s a beautiful lady. She’s gentle and very kind. “She has told me, ‘I will help lots of children and I will help you’.”

Sophie, indeed her whole family – brother Mitchell, 10, mum Carolyn, and dad Ron – have an unwavering faith when it comes to the spiritual powers of Mary, who lived by the motto, “If you see a need, meet it”.

Sophie’s is the kind of faith that can move mountains. She may be only eight years old, but she speaks with great understanding and unshakeable belief. She firmly believes her very survival after two horrific accidents is thanks to the miraculous deeds of Mary MacKillop.

“Mary MacKillop helped my doctors make my whole body better so I could stay alive,” says the brave little fighter who first captured our hearts in 2003.

“She helped me through all my operations. She helps me get stronger and better each day.”
