Sonia Kruger has glowing with happiness since her announcement that she is expecting a baby at age 49.
“I’m filled with this amazing excitement,” the Today host and Big Brother presenter revealed to Woman’s Day, before telling the very special story behind her pregnancy, which was only made possible when a close friend offered to donate one of her eggs to Sonia.

“I happened to be talking to a girlfriend of mine and she knew what I’d been through,” Sonia says. “As a bit of a joke I said, ‘This would all be solved if you gave me one of your eggs.’ And you know what? She came back and said, ‘OK’ without even thinking twice.”
It’s all thanks to a close friend that Sonia and her partner Craig Nine News executive Craig McPherson, 52, that they finally got their dream. The couple initially conceived naturally, only to miscarry in 2011, then a failed attempt at IVF using her own eggs in 2012.

“It’s hard to explain the relief when you see the ultrasound and you see or hear the heartbeat,” she says. “It’s as if someone has lifted a huge weight off you and you relax for a second – but then my mind starts playing tricks on me.”
Now 17 weeks pregnant, Sonia has put on 5kg and indulges her cravings for cookies-and-cream ice-cream and hot chips.

“I didn’t plan to have a baby this late in life, but I’ve always been a late bloomer – ?and being in such a wonderful relationship made it feel right. Craig says he’s good at putting a baby to sleep. I’m more worried how (her much loved Staffie) Fergie will adapt!”
