As the popular television host’s marriage split gets ugly, police speak to her about the punch-up and friends reveal they believe the marriage had been rocky for years.
Sonia Kruger was called by police after the punch-up between her husband and new boyfriend but no statement was taken because she did not see who started the fight.
The popular television host was still in the car when the brawl first erupted between her husband James Davies and her new boyfriend Craig McPherson as tensions escalated over her bitter divorce battle.
She then watched in horror as the punch-up, which left James with a broken nose, continued on Easter Sunday morning in the leafy Sydney suburb of St Ives.
Inspector Mick Banfield of Hornsby police told Woman’s Day: “Our officer in charge spoke to Sonia on the phone after the incident but no statement was taken.”
“One party followed the other in their car, both had then got out of their cars and Sonia was still in the car and didn’t see who threw the first punch,” he said.
The fight between the two middle-aged men occurred after months of tension between the Dancing With The Stars presenter and her husband who she split from last November.
The couple are still living in the same five-bedroom house and the stress of the situation is understood to have contributed to the punch-up.
“There certainly was a confrontation and we did speak about both parties being charged with affray but neither wanted to continue with further action,” said Inspector Banfield.
He continued: “They had both got out of their cars and it was obvious that Davies had got more injuries than the other party. We took statements from both but we couldn’t determine where they truth lay, so in the end the matter was dealt with civily.”
As Sonia and her husband continue their ugly battle over finances, a $4 million property portfolio and their pet dog Fergie, Woman’s Day has learned that the marriage has been rocky for years.
A source close to the couple this week revealed that a few years ago Sonia and James barely spoke to each other over a three-month period because she refused to apologise for staying out overnight and not telling him where she was.
Says the source: “From what I understand they were both very stubborn. She wouldn’t apologise and he wouldn’t speak to her until she did. The stand-off lasted for weeks.”
Sonia even used their conflicts as material for her radio show with Todd McKenney. On one occasion she rang James live on air and bickered about whether spouses should inform each other of their plans to go out. James claimed Sonia made him out to be a “control-freak monster,” and then he lashed out, saying, “You want to be a man!”
Todd McKenney, who co-hosts the show on MIX 106.5 with Sonia, was forced to mediate before telling listeners, “Oh, there’s going to be another barney when she gets home today”.
Anita Green, a friend and former colleague of James’s who attended the couple’s wedding six years ago, also reveals that intimacy between the couple had broken down long before they separated.
Yet despite all the tensions between the couple, including the question of whether they would have children, Anita believes James still loves his wife.
“He’s been very hurt by it all,” she says. “He wanted to stay married – right up to the last minute he wanted to stay married. Even now, despite everything that’s gone on, he still loves her a little bit.”
