The 44-year-old tells People magazine, “Yes, I have breast cancer, and I am currently undergoing treatment.”
“I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life. I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me.”
The former star of TV show Charmed was forced to explain her illness after court documents were uncovered by TMZ.
Shannen had filed a law suit against her business manager who allegedly failed to pay her insurance premiums and as a result her health cover was no longer valid.
The Playboy model was uninsured when she discovered that she had cancer and it went untreated.
According to the documents, the star was officially diagnosed in March 2015 and she “discovered that she had invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node as informed that her cancer had spread during 2014 (when she was uninsured).”
The document further explain that Shannen, who rose to fame on the 90’s show Beverly Hills: 90210, “was also informed that, had she been insured and able to visit her doctor, the cancer could potentially have been stopped.”
It continues: “thus obviating the need for future treatment (including mastectomy and chemotherapy) that [Shannen] will likely have to suffer through now.”
