Despite Taylor Swift taking out almost every award, it turns out she wasn’t eligible for Top Male Artist, so instead it went to the incomparable Sam Smith.
Sam cancelled his world tour earlier this month while in Australia due to illness, and the Stay With Me singer has since undergone vocal cord surgery and is banned from using his voice.
The Grammy Award-winner is taking time off to heal in New York, so in his absence from the Las Vegas awards ceremony he sent in a pre-recorded silent message, using placards to speak for him, just like that memorable Love Actually scene.
In the message, Sam first thanked “Billboard for this incredible honour”, before adding: “thank you to my amazing fans.”
Sam Smith is known for the emotion he puts into his work and this message was no exception during his silent speech.
“It’s times like these I realise how lucky I am to have you in my life,” he wrote.
The 22-year-old revealed that he “can’t wait to sing my ass off for you again,” he also had some messages for his famous friends.
“Seeing as you guys are in Vegas, Taylor… Put 100 on Black for me,” he joked, before addressing Nicki Minaj’s impressive backside.
Fellow Brit Ed Sheeran also got a shout-out, with Sam informing him: “I’ve organised a special dance for you at Chippendales,” in reference to the famous all-male striptease show.
Congratulations Sam, we hope you feel better soon and we can’t wait to see you back in Australia!
