Sam Kerr has just gone public with her new girlfriend after sparks flew on the field at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
The 27-year-old Matildas captain ignited rumours of a new romance when she was spotted sharing an embrace with US soccer player Kristie Mewis, 30, last week.
The athletes were photographed sitting on the field together after the Matildas lost to the USA team in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat.
Kristie appeared to be comforting Sam after the loss, but now the pair have confirmed there was more than sportsmanship behind their on-field embrace.
Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Sam shared a loved-up polaroid photo of herself sitting with Kristie in her lap, the pair sharing a kiss.
She captioned it with a simple red heart and tagged Kristie, who also shared a romantic snap on her own profile.
The US soccer star, who plays for Houston Dash, posted a selfie with Sam on her Instagram Stories, all but confirming their relationship.
Fans seemed thrilled with the new development, flooding Sam’s post with supportive comments and heart emojis.
News of Sam and Kristie’s romance comes fresh on the heels of the Aussie’s split from long-time partner Nikki Stanton.
Another US soccer star, Nikki plays for the Chicago Red Stars and originally met Sam through the sport, while Sam was playing in the States in 2014.
The pair hit it off, but the long-distance nature of their relationship (Sam is based in the UK, Nikki in the US) reportedly took its toll.
The Daily Telegraph reported that Sam and Nikki split in the lead-up to the Tokyo Olympic Games, having “fallen out of love.”
“Sam was the one who ended things and Nikki was obviously upset but she is healing,” a source told the outlet.
Now it appears that Sam is finding her own healing with a new romance with Kristie, and there are no hard feelings over their soccer rivalry.
The US team Kristie plays for defeated the Matildas in a nail-biting medal match, which saw the Aussie team miss out on a bronze medal.
Despite the loss, Matildas vice-captain Steph Catley said the team had gained a lot from their Olympic run.
“I would say we’ve gained a lot, learned a lot and come a long, long way from where we were,” she said.
And, by the looks of things, Sam gained a new romance from the Olympics too.
