Sabre Norris is the youngest ever surfer to compete in a major Australian event and while giving an interview about her achievement the straight-talking NSW girl won the hearts of many.
Fresh from an early morning surf 11-year-old Sabre told TODAY said she aspires to do better in the sporting realm than her Olympic swimmer dad, Justin Norris, who took home third place behind Michael Phelps in the 200m butterfly swimming final at the Sydney 2000 Games.
While Sabre admitted in an earlier SBS interview that she prefers surfing because swimming’s “a bit boring”, she took the opportunity in Thursday morning’s interview to throw some more shade at her dad – this time targeting his eating habits since retiring from professional swimming.
“Yeah, my dad used to be an athlete, but now he’s um, pretty fat,” said a very frank Sabre.
“He used to eat like, two litres of ice-cream every single night – like those salted caramel ones – and then used to get really angry at mum ‘cause mum didn’t always buy it for him.”
During the TMI interview the pint-sized pro was unsurprisingly egged-on by larrikin host Karl Sefanovic who matter-of-factly asked, “How fat’s your dad now?”
Giving credit where credit is due, Sabre revealed her dad is now on a health kick after being inspired by her own healthy eating.
“He’s actually lost 20 kilograms since Christmas – ‘cause he’s seen me eating so healthy because I’ve been inspired by Sally,” Sabre said of the far reaching influence of her mentor, surfing pro Sally Fitzgibbons.
“Now he’s just eating cucumbers.”
While her dad might not appreciate his self-assured daughter outing his ice-cream addiction (we’ve all been there Justin, don’t worry) it’s hard not to giggle at her candid little chat.
