“Who knew it would make you even closer? You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this,” the 58-year-old told the New York Times.
“I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me. It was such a normal, intimate time,” Rita added of her doting partner.
This week the actress was finally ready to get back to work, taking stake on the stage for her Broadway play, Fish in the Dark.
“It felt surreal that all these changes had happened… It was so much fun. I had adrenaline coursing through me like never before,” the mother-of-two mused of her return.
“In a way, it was like a second opening night.”
Last month Rita released a statement to People Magazine that explained how she was tackling her diagnosis head on.
“I have taken a leave from the play Fish in the Dark to deal with a personal health issue. Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma.”
“I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”
Rita was encouraged to get a second opinion by a friend who’d suffered from breast cancer.
“A friend who had had breast cancer suggested I get a second opinion on my pathology and my gut told me that was the thing to do.”
