It seemed like a spur of the moment decision but this kiss was actually 33-years in the making.
Naomi Watts and Nicole Kidman have been friends since they attend high school in Sydney and now the super-star actresses have banded together to send a really sweet message about female empowerment – complete with shower caps and a kiss.
Accepting the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film, Nic gave a speech about what it means to be a strong woman with her loyal and long-term friend by her side.
The mum-of-four revealed that at 14 she turned down starring in a film that was directed by Oscar Award-winning Jane Campion which was later shown at Cannes.
“My excuse was that I had final exams to study for, but the truth is, the part would have required me to appear up on the screen wearing a shower cap and kissing a girl,” the Moulin Rouge actress revealed.
Before expressing: “I wanted to be the kind of actress with long flowing hair [who] kissed boys… I was not ready to do the kind of work that threatened anybody.”
In a moment straight out of an inspirational Hollywood blockbuster the Aussie beauty put on her shower cap and said: “Well, today I know better and I say, ‘Jane, if you’re out there… I’m ready to don this cap.”
She then turned to a supportive Naomi Watts and re-created the scene she never got to act out before passionately locking lips with her pal.
The Hawaiian-born Aussie then urged the audience to encourage young girls to follow their dreams no matter how scary the circumstances be, before concluding: “Let’s stand tall and never apologise for it.”
The duo have defied the pressures of Hollywood by maintaining a solid friendship for over three decades, “I think that’s really rare, particularly for actresses, and I take a lot of pride in that,” Nicole told The Telegraph back in 2005.
