Crown Princess Mary of Denmark is now on the final stretch of her three-day visit to Ethiopia.
Accompanied by the Danish Minister for trade and development, Mogens Jensen, the focus of the trip was to continue furthering Denmark’s agenda and contribution to improve the health and rights of women and girls.
The Princess of Denmark landed on Monday morning in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, where she received a warm and festive welcome, presented with a big cream-layered cake and a bottle of champagne as a celebratory token for her efforts.
Mary was pictured wearing her pink and black patterned shirt from Danish label Heartmade which she also wore in 2011 on a visit to refugees in Dadaab, Somalia.
The Danish royal kicked off her duties by visiting Tierkidi, a refugee camp in Gambella, located in western Ethiopia near the border of South Sudan.
Over the course of the trip, the pair were scheduled to meet with civil society organisations, individuals championing the rights of women and girls and Ethiopian female entrepreneurs to discuss specific challenges they face in humanitarian crises as well as possible solutions.
She has also played her part in opening up a youth centre and participated in a discussion forum with young women.
The issue of women and girl’s health and humanitarian rights, including that of female circumcision, is at the forefront of Danish priorities and the country provides support to two UN agencies – UNFPA and UNICEF.
Ethiopia is one of the countries with the highest incidences of FGM (female genital mutilation), even though it is officially illegal.
