The Project co-host Peter Helliar has revealed he’s been absent from Channel 10’s news panel programme because he tested positive to COVID-19.

The comedian took to Instagram to announce his diagnosis, but said he only suffered mild symptoms thanks to the vaccine.

“So I was sick of friends saying they didn’t know anyone with Covid. So I went and got Covid (not deliberately of course),” he joked alongside a selfie.

“The worst it got was a mild cold.”

“I am nearing the end of my quarantine and I feel absolutely fine. The worst it got was a mild cold.

“Not because the virus didn’t have bad intentions but because science is brilliant and being fully immunised meant I had a whole bunch of vaxxy goodness protecting me. My family are safe and I am grateful.”

The 46-year-old said he would return to his usual co-hosting role on The Project on Wednesday evening alongside Carrie Bickmore and Waleed Aly.

“Thank you Science. I think I got a crush on you,” his post continued.

“Also to all the health workers and services. Luckily I didn’t need to go to hospital but everyone I spoke to on the phone were completely compassionate, professional, caring & incredibly patient.

“The system is undoubtedly under a great deal of stress but they are doing a wonderful job.”

Dozens of Pete’s celebrity friends commented on his post, wishing him a speedy recovery.

“So glad you’re ok Pete. And bravo to all the health care workers for all they have done over the last two years…and beyond,” The Project co-host Lisa Wilkinson wrote.

“So what do you get the guy who has everything…?” funnyman Rove McManus joked.

“Glad you’re OK – vaxxy goodness indeed x,” journalist Angela Bishop commented.
