Diana’s most trusted confidant, former butler Paul Burrell, tells HENRY MELLER what’s in store for Wills and Kate’s first child.
Diana, Princess of Wales, called him “my rock” and described him as the only man she ever trusted. Now, in an exclusive interview with Woman’s Day, Diana’s former butler of 10 years Paul Burrell reveals what life will be like for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first child.
As Kate continues to battle the crippling morning sickness that landed her in hospital earlier this month, forcing her to cancel engagements, Paul reveals she can rest easy in the knowledge that William will allow her to raise this game-changing young royal just how she wants. And comfortingly, her little one’s life will be nothing like Princes William and Harry’s tumultuous childhood.
What will home life be like for Kate and the baby?
The staff will call the baby “Baby Wales” and he or she will come home to Kensington Palace – which was also the childhood home of Prince William and Harry. However, William, Kate and their new baby – or possibly babies – will live in the apartment that once belonged to Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister. It’s actually much grander than the one William and Harry grew up in. You walk into a huge black and white marble hallway and it is truly luxurious – and it has its own private garden – that’s something William and Harry never had. Baby Wales will be out in the garden a lot of the time because all royal babies are taken out in the fresh air so they are “hardened” – that’s the way the royals do it.
How do you think Kate and William will cope with becoming new parents?
Life will be very different for Kate than it was for Diana – this is a different generation and William is a very different kind of husband than Charles was. I actually think Kate will be even more hands-on than Diana, if that’s possible. Kate might baulk at that idea of appointing a nanny but there will be times when she has to have help. I can see William changing nappies and being a very modern dad.
