The legendary singer was on 60 Minutes on Sunday night when she was asked by interviewer Karl Stefanovic about how she coped with how Patrick mysteriously vanished.

“Yeah it was very hard. He was lost at sea and nobody really knows what happened,” said the 67-year-old.

“It’s human to wonder. But you know … those are the things in life you have to accept and let go,” she said.

Since McDermott went missing off a fishing boat in California in 2005 there have been numerous “sightings” of a man people believe to be the former cameraman, leading to rumours he’s actually living a life of seclusion, but the Grease star said she refused to believe that the man she once loved would fake his own death.

Of the way she’s wrapped her head around what happened Newton-John said: “Because whenever you go through difficult times there’s always those concerns. But you know, I live on, and of course questions come up, that’s human.”

Olivia also talked to Karl about the way she has coped with her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi’s personal health struggles. The 30-year-old is the only child of the singer and since a young age has battled eating disorders and addiction.

Olivia said of late Chloe has been “doing really well”.

“I think it’s hard to be the child of a person that is in the limelight… there’s privilege, but there’s also other problems that come along with that.”

Olivia was on the show to promote the Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne. Since her own battle with cancer the star has been dedicated to campaigning for cancer research and support for patients.

“I’m interested in the cure, seeing an end to cancer and I believe we’re on our way,” she said.
