According to Rose Ann Harris, the administrator at the centre, the children had been expecting Princess Elsa.
“They thought she was the princess from ‘Frozen,” Harris said.
The Duchess, wearing a chic black coat from the luxe label Goat, was greeted with cries of “princess” from the children as she arrived with the wife of New York mayor, First Lady Chirlane McCray, and spent time shaking hands and chatting with her tiny fans.
The Duchess then spent time helping the children, all who have varying developmental problems, make Christmas decorations, and then later helped volunteers at the centre to wrap Christmas presents. The gifts will later be delivered to underprivileged children in the area.
A volunteer wrapper Mrs Dawkins – a volunteer classroom assistant and grandmother of 6 – told the Telegraph, “We sat together wrapping gifts – she’s my girl.
“She said she has to wrap gifts when she gets home.”
The Duchess later attended an official luncheon at the home British Consul General Danny Lopez and his wife Susan.
