She may have dazzled in Armani on the red carpet,  but the same can’t be said for Nicole Kidman’s performance in her new movie, Grace of Monaco.

The Oliver Dahan directed film which probes into the life of former Hollywood star turned royal, Grace Kelly, opened the first night of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews with the Hollywood Reporter going as far as calling the movie a “middlebrow mush.”

While some critics adored Nicole’s performance of the bold and adventurous princess who controversially left her booming Hollywood career behind to marry Prince Rainer III of Monaco in 1956, others weren’t convinced.

“Kidman‘s breathless, blank performance does little to add life or credibility to a script that, looking on the bright side, might have audiences giggling for years to come,” said Time Out.

Another review described the fictional interpretation as “something of a disaster.”

Before the movie’s screening on Tuesday night, a confident Nicole, 46, said she felt there were similarities between her life and that of Grace Kelly.

“There are so many layers to this, when an actress is playing an actress,” she said.  “Obviously I did not marry a prince.” She corrected herself, no doubt remembering hearth and home with singer Keith Urban in Nashville. “Well, I am married to a prince – a country prince!”
