In launching the foundation to assist homeless and LGBT youth, Miley told the AP in an interview that not all her past relationships were “straight, heterosexual” ones.
She later took to her Facebook page to add: “I never want to label myself! I am ready to love anyone that loves me for who I am! I am open.”
The comments came only a few days after she spoke about her gender identity in an interview with Out Magazine .
“I didn’t want to be a boy,” the former Hannah Montana star said.
Adding: “I kind of wanted to be nothing. I don’t relate to what people would say defines a girl or a boy, and I think that’s what I had to understand: Being a girl isn’t what I hate, it’s the box that I get put into.”
The Wrecking Ball singer famously asked a young homeless man to accept her Video of the Year trophy at last year’s MTV VMAs, and says this played a strong part in inspiring her to create the organisation.
The issues of the LGBTQI community are a cause close to Miley’s heart, and she also called Bruce Jenner “my hero” for drawing attention to transgender issues. Like Bruce, Miley says she wants to use her fame for good.
“When you have all eyes on you, what are you saying? And that’s what I had to ask myself a lot,” she told the AP.
And with over 1.6million homeless youth in the United States, over 40% of them identify as LGBTQI, Miley’s crusade will clearly be a worth one.
