But there are also some basic human rights – like getting some fresh air – which you are no longer afforded, just ask Mrs Obama.
After eight years in the White House, Michelle Obama can finally start planning her life outside those pristine walls as her husband’s presidency comes to an end.
But for the mum-of-two it’s not the generous ex-President’s pension or a long-awaited holiday that’s got her excited, it is something much more simple.
“I want to do little things, like open a window,” the First Lady revealed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
“I want to go to Target, I want to drive,” she quipped.
Although Michelle, 51, made clear her first priority “long after we leave the white house,” is to advance the opportunity for women to get an education globally – she also just really wants to be able to wind down the window of her car without getting prior security clearance.
“I can’t open my windows, I really can’t… the window opens if I press it in the car everybody’s like ‘oh my God, what was that?’”
It’s not all stuffy chauffeur-driven limo rides for style icon though, “One day as a treat my lead agent let me have the windows open on the way to Camp David [the President’s country retreat] it was like five minutes out and he was like ‘window is open, enjoy it’.”
