Meryl Streep might be the most admired actress in the world but even she knows what it’s like to be intimidated by somebody famous.
The 66-year-old actress told The Graham Norton Show, before she had her name in lights she had a rather awkward encounter with a movie star in the 1970s.
“The first famous person I knew was Al Pacino,” Streep told Norton in a clip obtained by ET.
“I didn’t work with him, but he came over to the house for dinner.”
The veteran actress explained that the Scar Face star was close friends with her then-boyfriend, actor John Cazale, and to this day, she is still haunted by the choice of dish she cooked her Italian-American dinner guest: spaghetti.
“I cooked homemade spaghetti sauce,” Streep said. “Somebody had told me once to put a carrot in the sauce.”
Despite her effort the actress tells: “It was awful.”
And her behavior at dinner also left her wanting to forget how she fidgeted anxiously all night.
“I was so nervous because he was so famous,” she said with a laugh. “But, you know, people are people.”
Years later Streep had the chance to redeem herself when she starred with Pacino in Angels in America – by then she was well on her way to becoming the most Oscar nominated performer – 18, including three wins.
