She’s one of the funniest women in Hollywood, but life hasn’t always been full of laughs for comedian Melissa McCarthy.

The 43-year-old actress has opened up about crying over her weight as a young girl and how she found the self-confidence to be a star.

“In my 20s I used to cry about why I wasn’t thinner or prettier, but I want to add that I also used to cry about things like: ‘I wish my hair would grow faster. I wish I had different shoes,” she told People Magazine.

“I was an idiot … It’s a decade of tears” the star added.

During the emotional interview, the Bridesmaids actress also admitted how she had to develop thicker skin and let the rude comments slide in order to realise her full beauty and potential.

“I’ve never felt like I needed to change,” she said.

“I’ve always thought, ‘If you want somebody different, pick somebody else.’ But sure, criticism can sometimes still get to me. Some things are so malicious, they knock the wind out of you.”

Now-a-days, Melissa, who is married to ‘Tammy’ co-writer Ben Falcon, is all about being the bigger person and owning it.

“I’m completely delighted by people who think, ‘I don’t care what anybody else thinks, I look great in this, and I rock it and I love it.’ It’s such a delightful sort of confidence,” she said.

The fun-loving mother-of-two says she also intends to make sure her daughters Vivian, 7, and Georgie, 4, grow up valuing love and laughter more than looks.
