“We made the decision [to end it] because we wanted to be happier, we wanted a better outcome and we wanted a better life for the future. We both made that decision, and we didn’t make it lightly,” he admitted to news.com just a month after they announced the split.

And mum Ewa has always helped her son through heartache.

Michael, main with his family and inset with his parents and sister, says his mum Ewa has helped through some of his biggest challenges.

“I went to Atlanta being number one in the world, but after missing out on the finals my dream was shattered – I was shattered – and that was when my family really counted,” he says, looking at Ewa.

“I have a photo of Mum giving me a cuddle with me crying on the side of the pool.”
