He’s been keeping a low profile in the US of late, but it looks like troubled actor Matthew Newton has found love.
The Australian star is engaged to Catherine Schneiderman, according to local reports. It’s believed the pair have kept their engagement secret from even their closest family and friends, with Matthew’s parents Bert and Patti also unaware of the news.
While friends say Catherine has been seen wearing a large diamond ring, she removes the sparkler whenever she visits her dad, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. An advocate against domestic abuse, Eric passed a bill in 2010 to increase the punishment for domestic abuse crimes.
‘We must do everything in our power to ensure that no-one is immune from accountability for committing such a heinous crime,’ Eric said at the time.
It’s not known if Matthew has met his reported future father-in-law. However, it’s Matthew’s dark past, which include allegations of domestic assault against former partners Rachael Taylor and Brooke Satchwell. Pals say Catherine is aware of Matthew’s history, but believes the 39-year-old actor is a ‘misunderstood genius,’ according to a local publication.
Bert and Patti have previously spoken about Matt’s battle with bipolar disorder. ‘He is happy, he’s doing good things, and that’s the most important thing,’ Bert says.
