Martin confirmed that they’d ended their relationship, with the Financial Times reporting he said, “I’m not with Amanda any more. It’s very, very amicable – I’ll always love Amanda.”
At this time no further details on their split has been provided.
The 45-year-old actor met Amanda on the set of the 2000 film, Men Only, and the duo continued their work together on the internationally acclaimed TV series, Sherlock.
With life imitating art, the pair play fan favourites Doctor Watson, and his wife, Mary, on the British drama.
In cruel twist of fate, their characters’ relationship begins to crumble, after they welcome a baby.
In real life the Hobbit lead and Amanda are the proud parents to their two children, Grace and Joe Freeman.
During Martin’s chat with the UK publication, the Hollywood star admitted that his lengthy overseas filming commitments was one of the key reasons behind the split.
Amanda is said to have mused that they’d “realised we’d come to the end of our time together”.
“Martin and I remain best friends and love each other, and it was entirely amicable,” she said during an interview with Stella.
“There was no hostility, really, we just said that we couldn’t live together anymore, so we put everything in place, he moved out to a flat in north London, I stayed at home and we’ve started a new chapter.”
“It is sad and it is upsetting, because you think you’re going to be with someone forever, but you either do that or you break up, and we both came to the decision that splitting was best for us. We’ve been really lucky to make it such a clean break, especially for the kids.”

The starlet would still love to act with her former flame, “I love working with Martin, and we definitely would do again.”
She also addressed how the split has affected the couple’s kids.
They felt “quite vulnerable” after the split, but “they’re very cool. They know they’re so loved, and have a huge support network around them of both our families and friends”.
She added: “He sees the children as much as he wants to, and [will spend] Christmas here. We play it by ear on childcare, and it’s working so far.
“They’ll get the best of us now, which is far better than living in a house that’s not harmonious.”
