Mariah Carey might be loved up with backup dancer turned boyfriend Bryan Tanaka, but she’s sick of having to explain what happened during her New Year’s Eve performance.
The now-infamous New Year’s Eve incident unfolded when Mariah refused to sing and claimed her performance in Times Square was sabotaged when her ear-piece and microphone weren’t working; the show set-up to be a trainwreck to “get ratings,” commented her manager Stella Bulochnikov to US Weekly.
“I will never know the truth, but I do know that we told them three times that her mic pack was not working and it was a disastrous production,” Stella added. “I’m certainly not calling the FBI to investigate. It is what it is: New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Mariah did them a favour. She was the biggest star there, and they did not have their act together.”
Now Mariah has once again commented on what really happened that night, telling Associated Press that she has moved past the incident although adding that she still feels “upset about the fact that people didn’t understand” that because her ear-piece was malfunctioning, she couldn’t hear the music. And “if you can’t hear it, how can you sing to it?”
Mariah also hit back at critics who said she should have sung regardless of her broken ear-piece: “All you can hear is the audience singing and a delayed musical moment.”
“I don’t know why it’s not okay that I was victimised and vilified by the situation,” Mariah said of her treatment after the event. She believes the standards are different for her than other celebrities because she has to make “five million comebacks.”
Poor Mimi, not even her recent nip slip could help her forget this career stuff-up but with any luck by NYE 2017 she’ll have got over this.
