If the leaked Sony emails are anything to go by it, then the Australian actress has been picked to play the iconic blonde doll.
In email exchanges, dating back to last year, the president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, Doug Belgrad, expresses his preference for the Wolf Of Wall Street star to play the Mattel toy.
“As far as who would play Barbie probably an ingénue. I like Margot Robbie. Or possibly a discovery,” Doug Belgrad wrote in an email.
Producer Laurie MacDonald also backed Margot, in an email to former Sony boss Amy Pascal. “She’s Barbie come to life — she’d be great!”
According to an email from Hannah Minghella, the co-president of production at Sony’s Columbia Pictures division, the former Neighbours star agreed with the Sony execs.
“(Agent David) Bugliari pitched Margot the idea and she loved it! She’s free in October once she wraps Tarzan,” Hannah wrote.
And what’s Barbie without her sidekick? The Sony execs also discussed options with Kristen Wiig, Tina Fey, Amy Adams, Amy Schumer and even Sandra Bullock as potential candidates.
“I like Amy Adams more than Wiig – more marketing bang there. Wiig is funny but can seem a bit sad/pathetic while Amy is entirely endearing,” one Sony executive apparently shared.
Laurie’s husband and fellow producer, Walter Parkes, shared his concern about casting Sandra Bullock.
“Are we sure Sandy isn’t too old? Do we really believe she’s on the cusp of “losing her dream?”
But it looks like it all comes down to money.
“This is a concept movie. We shouldn’t spend a bundle on the star. I’m not trying to undermine the idea of Sandy she’s fantastic but I just want to ask the right questions.”
