In 2014, when Margot Robbie’s star was only just beginning its upward trajectory and she was still largely hanging out in a London share flat with her boyfriend Tom Ackerley and their mates, the couple hatched a plan.
With her a talented young actress and him showing plenty of promise behind the cameras, Margot and Tom, both 30, created film production company LuckyChap – and promised each other they wouldn’t let work dampen their relationship.
Six years later, the pair are married and split their time between London and Los Angeles, where LuckyChap was behind hits including I, Tonya and Birds Of Prey – starring, of course, Margot.
But now their steamy new film Dreamland is set for release and sources tell Woman’s Day the sizzling sex scenes between Margot and British hunk Finn Cole, 25, have caused an uncomfortable rift between husband and wife.
PAINFUL SCENES TO WATCH
“Tom knows chemistry is essential when it comes to making a good drama, but given he’s not an actor, it can be a struggle for him to understand how Margot can portray so much attraction to another man while feeling nothing,” says a source.
“Especially in this movie. He’s watched them act out a particularly erotic shower scene so many times he’s starting to question his sanity.”
It doesn’t help that Margot sings Finn’s praises at every available opportunity.
Last week she described the Peaky Blinders star as “the perfect scene partner” and a “dream come true” to work with.
“They were strange comments to make about an up-and-coming name, given she’s shared title roles with the likes of Leo DiCaprio, Will Smith and Jared Leto,” says a source.
“Finn is talented but I find it hard to believe he has reached the skill levels of those guys just yet. It must be very awkward for Tom to have to watch his wife simulating sex with another man and then have her going on about him every chance she gets.”
LONDON LOCKDOWN
Margot and Tom have mostly been riding out the pandemic at their home in London, leaving their Los Angeles life behind.
“They’ve found it quite challenging to be stuck in together, obsessing over these scenes and having them chosen to promote Dreamland to the masses,” says a source.
“They’re very good together normally but it seems that their work life is seeping into their home life. Last time they were on set together it was noted that Tom seemed subdued.”
Sources add that a recent article on the Mail Online that rather smuttily compiled all the times Margot stripped to her undies – or less – for a movie scene, only inflamed the tensions between the couple, who are due to celebrate their fourth wedding anniversary next month.
“When you see it all laid bare like that, so to speak, you have to feel for her husband. I wonder if, given he’s just as much in charge of their productions as she is, he will start steering her away from sex scenes for a while to give their marriage some breathing room.”
