It seems no matter how large their celebrity status, world leaders, movie stars and sportsmen alike all jumped at the chance to meet humanitarian guru Nelson Mandela.

Since his release from prison 23 years ago, until his death on December 5 aged 95, the former South African president, who fought hard for equal rights, inspired countless stars, from Oprah Winfrey to Michael Jackson; from Naomi Campbell to The Spice Girls.

And while they all sought to be in his presence, the freedom fighter showed just as much interest in meeting them.
