After their recent engagement news, Locky Gilbert and Irena Srbinovska have never been more thankful that The Bachelor franchise brought them together.
But with another season of The Bachelor approaching with three leading men rather than one being announced, the couple have made their mixed feelings known.
In an exclusive chat with Now To Love, Locky and Irena express their doubts over how the rebooted dating show will fare among apprehensive Bachie fans.
“I don’t know how that’s going to work,” Irena says of Channel 10’s decision to cast three male leads this year.
“I feel like when you’ve got a group of girls and then also three guys, I think it could be very – I don’t think it’ll be scandalous – but I think there will be a lot of tension, a lot of catfights. Having three guys – I’m definitely happy that I only had the one.”
“So am I!” Locky laughs, saying he’s less sceptical about the new format.
“It will be a whole different show which I think the show did need because it was just the same kind of thing again and again. People get bored these days. I’m pretty excited to see it.”
Despite the buzz around the new Bachelors, Locky and Irena admit they’re disappointed at the recent cancellation of The Bachelorette following two years of dismal ratings.
“It’s a shame that The Bachelorette is not going ahead because I think giving a female the leading role is always good and it’s good to see a woman in that position,” Irena says.
The franchise will also play a small role in their wedding, with Locky and Irena revealing a number of their co-stars will be attending their nuptials.
“I’m really close with Claire over in WA, Belle in Sydney, Bec who’s now in Brissie, Charlie, Marg, Georgie, Marlana, Paige. I talk to a lot of them,” Irena says.
“Juliet will definitely be invited – she tried to call me straight away and she’s just over the moon! And I can’t forget Kaitlyn. I’m really fortunate that I get a lot of support from the girls.”
“They’ve shared the amazing journey with us both. I know they’re all very much invested and excited for us as well.”
Locky and Irena, both 31, may have only gotten engaged less than a week ago, but the excited couple have already started nutting out details of their ceremony.
“Because Irena’s got such a big family and we’ve got friends all over Australia, we’re trying to figure out the best way [to have everyone involved],” Locky says.
“It’s either going to be two massive engagement parties and an intimate wedding. Or one massive 500-people wedding,” Lachie says, before Irena adds: “Or we just go and elope!”
While it’s no secret Locky and Irena can’t get enough of hiking and roughing it in the great outdoors, they’ll most likely head to tropical paradise The Maldives for their honeymoon.
“My cousin lives over there, so we thought it would be a nice way to hang out with her and her hubby over there. I’ve never been before and they’ve got great diving,” Irena reveals.
Locky also throws Antarctica into the mix, though the couple agree they won’t venture there until after their honeymoon.
With wedding and honeymoon planning bound to take up a good chunk of their time, it seems Locky and Irena couldn’t fit any more on their plate. But after recently buying their first home together in Perth, their schedules just became even more jampacked.
“We’re planning to completely gut our house and completely renovate it from head to toe, inside and out,” Irena explains.
“We’re super excited. Locky and I are trying to be as hands-on as possible to do as much as we can on our own.”
Ever the avid explorers, Locky and Irena recently teamed up with campervan giant Jayco for even more cross-country adventures.
“We’re super lucky to be working with Jayco. We’ve done a trip around Australia, we did it kind of rough in a camper trailer and we wanted to upgrade. Having a Jayco with us now is perfect having the luxury of a shower and a toilet,” Locky says.
“We’ve got a big trip planned next week… we’re going down to Pemberton [in WA]. I’m going to take the Jayco pretty off-road as we love.”
