The video for Literally I Can’t, which features Lil’ Jon and Enertia McFly, has sparked anger for its depiction of a group of college women who are mocked and harassed for not engaging in the sexual acts the men are encouraging them to do.
The lyrics have also come under fire, with lines such as:
“You’re annoying b**** because you’re talking”
“Shh… I said jump on the pole; I didn’t need your opinion”
Redfoo responded to the controversy with a series of tweets, defending the song and its video, saying that the criticism is “just another example of critics victimizing an artist”.
Another example of critics victimizing an artist by purposely misinterpreting his/her work to support a pre-existing agenda. #LiterallyICant
Fact #2: I love & respect women and feel they are the most powerful people on this planet! #LiterallyICant
Many have expressed their outrage on Twitter since the video’s release, labelling it a “celebration of rape culture”, and have started the hash tag “#ShutTheFooUp”.
In breaking news, Tony Abbott has enlisted Redfoo as minister for women’s affairs #auspol #ShutTheFooUp
The celebration & glorification of rape culture in all it’s insidious forms must be rejected. #ShutTheFooUp
The petition to take Redfoo off of the popular television program X Factor was created by Collective Shout yesterday, and has since drawn 6,853 signatures.
