Music legend Leonard Cohen dead at 82

Leonard Cohen's music label has confirmed the singer has died.

Leonard Cohen, Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist who entertained for more than five decades, has died at the age of 82.

Sony Music Canada, the label which represented Cohan, confirmed his death on the singer’s Facebook page.

“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away,” the statement read. “We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief.”

A cause of death was not given.

In an online tribute to the singer Rolling Stone wrote, “Only Bob Dylan exerted a more profound influence upon his generation, and perhaps only Paul Simon and fellow Canadian Joni Mitchell equalled him as a song poet.”

Leonard Cohen performed live for Melbourne fans at Rod Laver Arena in 2013.

In an ominous October interview for the New Yorker an elderly Cohen talked about getting older.

“I am ready to die,” he said. “I hope it’s not too uncomfortable. That’s about it for me.”

Tributes have begun to flow of the legendary musician online.

Bette Midler expressed her sadness with a tweet that said Cohen’s passing marked “Another magical voice stilled.”
