Women are held to such impossibly high beauty and body standards these days, at times it can feel hard to live up to the expectations – especially if you don’t have a supermodel-perfect body.
So, it was more than a refreshing change from the usual Victoria’s Secret parade when actress and writer, Lena Dunham, posted this body-positive selfie.
Lena, who heads up her real and raw show about girls living in New York (not to be confused with Sex and the City), Girls, posted this snap of herself decked out in some brand new lingerie on Memorial Day in the US.
The pic was captioned, “Love my @lonelylingerie and I think I will wear it to dinner with some boots & a smile because we are all very lucky to be free”.
Dunham, who has struggled with her weight and body image before, has been open and candid about her struggles – and her fight back.
“I have sort of a Zen body philosophy,” said Dunham last year, “It’s just a vessel I’ve been given to move through this life. I think about my body as a tool to do the stuff I need to do, but not the be all and end all of my existence. Which sounds like I spent a week at a meditation retreat, but it’s genuinely how I feel.”
“I think if I can do anything, as cliché as it sounds, to aid in the comfort of a woman accepting her form, then I want to do that.”
But Ms Dunham is not the first celeb to skip out on the diets and airbrushing. Check out our favourite body-positive celebrity selfies.
We love this carefree snap of Lena Dunham.
“Love my @lonelylingerie and I think I will wear it to dinner with some boots & a smile because we are all very lucky to be free”.
But it’s not the first time she’s posted a body positive pic!
“Late to @tracyandersonmethod & forgot my workout clothes so had to snag a size large bra and size small pants (wrong in myriad ways.) But do we soldier on? Yes, yes we do because we want to be a strong & happy lady #largebrasmallpantscantlose”
Just like Hannah in Girls, Lena is open and real about her body.
“Springtime means shorteralls #nothighgap”
Model Chrissy Teigan also garnered praise when she posted this picture of herself, proudly displaying her stretchmarks.
“Bruises from bumping kitchen drawer handles for a week. Stretchies say hi!”
Since her departure from her squeaky clean Disney image, Selena Gomez has been open and positive about her weight gain and new body.
“I love being happy with me yall #theresmoretolove”.
As is fellow Disney star, Demi Lovato, who admitted to struggling with eating disorders and self harming for years.
“Regardless of what society tells you these days… You don’t have to have a thigh gap to be beautiful. It is possible to love your body the way it is. #fitness #health #acceptance #selflove”.
Actress and model, Jaime King, posted this picture of herself pregnant.
“My body. My growing baby, open for comments. Plain as day. I, like every other woman, bracing for your judgments. This is who I am. And I love me in every flaw and curve or flat or thin area. And I love you as well in every form that your body takes.”
Mother of one, Hillary Duff, went on Instagram to encourage mothers about their post-baby bodies.
“Hey #moms #westillgotit ❤️ #loveyourbod”.
And young singer, Lorde, has never been one for airbrushing.
“I find this curious. Two photos from today, one edited so my skin is perfect and one real. Remember flaws are ok :-)”
But the singer has been pretty consistent with keeping it real.
“In bed in paris with my acne cream on”.
