Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan were briefly one of Australia’s most talked-about couples, with the pair dating for three years in the late 80s at the height of their fame while playing Scott and Charlene on Neighbours.
But while Kylie left Jason and went on to date rocker Michael Hutchence, and Jason later married his current wife Angela Malloch, there is certainly no bad blood between the pair, with the much-loved duo still enjoying a wonderful amicable friendship, more than 30 years later.
And now Kylie has opened up about one of her and Jason’s more recent iconic moments – their onstage reunion singing their hit 80s song Especially For You, during a concert in London’s Hyde Park in 2018.
The incredible moment [WATCH in the video player above] was arranged at the very last minute and was surprisingly casual, Kylie has now revealed.
Speaking to Nova 96.9 breakfast hosts Fitzy and Wippa on Friday morning, Kylie explained exactly how the special moment was arranged.
“Can I tell you about that? Because it was just beautiful,” Kylie said.
“I texted [Jason] maybe a day or two days before the show, saying ‘Hey I’ve got this gig on in Hyde Park – if you want to come let me know’.
“He said he had a lot on and if he was going to come it would just be him on his bike, I said ‘Sure. Let me know’.
“So then he told me he was going to come, I let my team know and of course, you should see the light bulbs go off on all of them. ‘Did you ask him?! I said ‘I’m not going to ask him now, he’s cycling in’.
“So I said to him ‘We’re doing the song anyway, do you want to join in? You can say no, you can just do a little bit, whatever you want to do’.
“Bless him, he did it. Afterwards, I had grown good friends of mine calling me crying!”
Jason joined Kylie onstage for a rendition of Especially For You.
(Image: Supplied)At the time, Jason shared on Twitter how his low-key arrival turned into the glittering onstage reunion.
“I literally turned up on my bike to support my friend Kylie Minogue and next thing you know I’m onstage Hyde Park in front of 70,000 people recreating those dance moves Especially For You 1988 .. mad!” he wrote on Twitter.
“Loved every second. Thank you for all your support. Memories = magic.”
Aussie author Kathy Lette even shared a photo of Jason on his bike arriving to the venue, calling him an “earthy, no fuss Aussie”.
It seems the bond between Jason and Kylie is still super strong, even after all these years.
Back in June, Kylie posted a wonderful tribute to Jason to mark his 52nd birthday.
Sharing a series of throwback pictures to Instagram, Kylie wrote: “Happy birthday Jason!!!”
“We go back such a long way now. What amazing times! Working with the ‘grown ups’, learning lines, giggling on set with Guy and the team, travelling the world. Etc ETC!!!”
