The 44-year-old shock jock confided in his KIIS FM listeners and co-host Jackie O, speaking candidly of the sad death of his Brisbane-based father, which happened only yesterday.
“The doctors said he would probably pass away during that week I wasn’t going to be in the country. I went up, spoke to him — my brother and I had a nice visit. He was suffering — he had liver cancer and bowel cancer,” Kyle admitted.
“I said to him, ‘Don’t you die while I’m away, it’d ruin the trip!’ He was laughing, but he was suffering greatly,” the radio host continued.
“When I arrived home yesterday, I sent a text to a few friends — including Dad — saying, ‘I’m back bitches, I’m back in the country,’ — then he died 10 minutes later.”
Showing Australia a more vulnerable side, the Aussie radio personality went on to discuss how his dad repeatedly asked whether his son had “touched down back in Australia”. Kyle revealed he passed away only after his stepmother informed Peter that Kyle was home.
“She said, ‘Yeah, he’s back,’ she read him the text, then he died,” Kyle quipped. The Aussie host has spoken in the past about his difficult relationship with his dad, admitting on-air that in recent years they’d repaired it.
He briefly touched on the past, telling the listeners, “It’s the regret of 10 years in the middle there when he was forcing [it], I was trying to pretend everything was alright, and it was a messy 10 years.”
Ending the topic on a sweeter note, the 44-year-old shock jock shared an anecdote from his childhood. Kyle explained that from about the age of 11, he refused to give his father a kiss – something that became an ongoing joke in their family.
Speaking fondly of their final moments together, Kyle revealed his got to kiss his dad goodbye, before ending the segment with a joke.
“I love you, Dad, wherever you are. We’ll get [psychic medium] John Edwards on, and we’ll get dad back!”
