Katie Holmes has broken her silence on her impending divorce from Tom Cruise, telling a reporter from theNew York Daily News, “I’m alright. Thank you.” But when it comes to fighting for sole custody of six-year-old Suri, she is playing hardball.
Stepping out in public on the Fourth of July holiday for only the second time since she announced she was divorcing Tom, 50, Katie tried to keep Suri’s life as normal as possible.
Katie, 33, and Suri stepped out in New York to pick up some groceries, including ground beef, hamburger rolls and strawberries, and also made a visit to a nearby ice-cream parlour (See the pictures and video here) .
“She’s been miserable for a long time, but the last couple of weeks, she’s been happy ? like she’s been set free,” an unnamed insider toldUs Weekly.
Meanwhile, theDawson’s Creekactress has instructed her lawyers to file for an emergency custody and child support hearing in New York, where she has recently rented an apartment after moving out of the home she shared with Tom. “Paperwork regarding Suri’s custody was filed yesterday,” an insider told Rader Online.
While both have hired top lawyers, Katie’s choice of top divorce attorney Allan E Mayefsky is said to be a tactical move.
“She’s making it clear she’s going to play tough,” legal analyst and author Lisa Bloom told the Daily Beast.
“Cruise is more of a high-profile celebrity than she is, so he has a greater distance to fall if grievances are aired. Everyone has dirty laundry they don’t want aired. She’s saying, ‘Play fair with me or else’,” she said.
“Of course she would choose an experienced and tough lawyer. But the fact that she’d choose someone who’s been known to go to media in the past signals that she might have hired him for that reason.”
Tom’s team of lawyers led by one of LA’s top divorce attorneys, Dennis Wasser, is said to have already brought on a New York firm to coordinate the case, Radar Online reported.
