It’s been nearly four years since Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise announced their whirlwind romance had come to an abrupt end.
After the tying the knot in a lavish Italian ceremony in 2006, Katie became deeply involved with the Church of Scientology. But after she filed for divorce from Tom in 2012, she returned to the Catholic Church.
And while the mother-of-one has maintained a resolute silence on their fascinating relationship ever since, that hasn’t stopped gutsy reporters from trying to coax information out of her.
On Tuesday, the 37-year-old was caught off-guard during an interview with Today show co-host Matt Lauer as she discussed her latest film, Touched With Fire.
The flick focuses on treating mental illnesses with drugs and Matt just couldn’t help himself and referenced his infamous 2005 interview with Katie’s then-husband, Tom Cruise.
The men came to blows in a heated debate over anti-depressants and psychology, with passionate Scientologist Tom ultimately damning both.
He also slammed Brooke Shields for turning to anti-depressants and therapy to help deal with postpartum depression.
“I’ve never agreed with psychiatry, ever,” Tom said at the time.
Before adding: “And as far as the Brooke Shields thing, look, you got to understand, I really care about Brooke Shields. I think, here’s a wonderful and talented woman. And I want to see her do well. And I know that psychiatry is a pseudo-science.”
“All it [anti-depressants] does is mask the problem, Matt. And if you understand the history of it, it masks the problem. That’s what it does. You’re not getting to the reason why. There is no such thing as a chemical imbalance,” the father-of-three fumed.
Understandably, Katie was rather surprised when Matt probed, “It also asks the question: Is it beneficial to treat these people with drugs?”
“You and I both remember a heated discussion I got into on that subject here in this studio. How do you think the movie comes down on that? Where does it lead the viewer?”
Ever the pro, the Dawson’s Creek beauty simply smiled and steered the conversation back on the movie she was there to promote.
“Right. Well, what I think that our director did a wonderful job with is – this movie kind of just shows this is it,” Katie, who shares nine-year-old daughter Suri with Tom, explained.
“These two characters are in a love story, which he says is kind of its own mania. He puts the question out there for the audience to make the question.”
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how you avoid talking about your ex-husband with grace and glory!
