In news sure to upset hundreds of former Home & Away stars, Karl Stefanovic has made the near-impossible leap from Australian TV to Hollywood without even trying.

The Today host announced this morning that he will have a speaking role in the upcoming sci-fi film Independence Day: Resurgence.

Karl will be playing “a dodgy Australian TV host” in the role he won while on set in New Mexico for the film’s international press conference.

“It’s not easy playing me,” he told his co-hosts this morning. “I play myself, which is very complex. Getting to the bottom of my own personality is not easy. It’s a breakthrough role.”

“I went onto the set and there was this blue screen thing happening and then [cast and crew] all sat down and they said ‘Righto, there’s going to be a speaking part given to one of you press people’ from around the world.

“You’re going to have to see the movie to see this speaking part. It may not be long, it may not be very involved, and it may be awful.”

The remake stars Jeff Goldblum, Liam Hemsworth and Vivica A. Fox. Will Smith declined to return for the movie, which will be released next year.
