As Taylor Swift presented Kanye West with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, also known as the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night, the poloarising rapper made a completely bewildering statement.
After a lengthy speech Mr West declared, “I have decided in 2020 to run for president.”
Yep, that’s right. The infamously self-confident star has decided he wants to be President of the United States of America – perhaps the most powerful political position of the free world.
When the soon-to-be father-of-two first took to the stage, he acknowledged the controversial 2009 MTV VMAs where he notoriously interrupted Taylor Swift during her acceptance speech.
He apologised for his behvaiour six years ago and admitted having first child North West made him ashamed of what he did to Taylor, as she too is someone else’s daughter.
The political-wannabe also revealed that he took “something” before taking to the stage on Sunday and launching into his 12 minute rant.
“I rolled up a little something. I knocked the edge off,” he explained, insinuating he had smoked a joint.
Prior to announcing his presidential bid for 2020 he had some words of wisdom about the music industry, “I will die for the art, for what I believe in, and art ain’t always going to be polite.”
He added: “We gotta teach our kids that they can be something. That they can stand up for themselves. If my grandfather was here, he would not let me back down.”
Proud wife Kim Kardashian watched on from the crowd while sister-in-law Kylie Jenner was quick to post to her Instagram feed, “Kanye West for President.”
It’s safe to say that fans are completely taken aback by the news and people are not yet 100% sure if it’s an elaborate – but knowing Kanye West, it’s most likely for real.
Stay tuned.
